As a former winter-hater, I’ve really come to love this time of the year, and it made me ponder… You rarely hear little kids talking about how much they hate winter.
Sledding, warm drinks, cozy clothes and the pure magic of snow: it’s easy to understand why children often view winter not with hate, but with a deep sense of awe.
To celebrate wintertime, here are 5 cozy and hygge winter books to read to the little ones in your life.

#1: A Cozy Winter Day by Eliza Wheeler
Summary: Follow the acorn villagers as they make their way through a cozy winter’s day. From reading to sled riding-it completes the recipe for ultimate hygge!
I recently sent this book to my friend’s little daughter for her birthday and I got the following text thanking me: “Well, this is the coziest little book that ever was!” This book is really just the epitome of what winter is all about.
“When a frosty chill is in the air and snowflakes go swirling all around, we know it’s time for a cozy winter day.” -Eliza Wheeler, A Cozy Winter Day
#2: Snow Riders by Constance W. McGeorge
Summary: Siblings Matthew and Molly wake up to find school cancelled with a snow day. Spending the day outside, they work to create not snowmen… but snow-horses out of the snow. When daylight runs out and bedtime calls, they instead decide to sneak back outside to ride their snow-horses-only to discover something magical has happened!
This book is a favorite from my childhood, and-looking back at it now as an adult-it still brings a smile to my face. Growing up in the midwest, there truly was no thrill like that of having a snow day and spending the day outside doing as much as you could with the free day. The sense of magic this book brings to life also just highlights upon that deep sense of wonder wintertime brings.
“All day they worked. They packed and pounded handfuls of snow over, under, and between the big snowballs. Finally, their creations were complete-with eyes and ears and flowing manes and tails!”-Constance McGeorge, Snow Riders
#3: Winter Magic by Eveline Hasler
Summary: One dark winter night, Peter learns the story of the Winter King and his Icicle Kingdom from his mother. When Peter falls fast asleep that night, he dreams all about the residents of Icicle Kingdom-and suddenly, Peter finds his dream world and real world colliding to teach him that winter isn’t really worth hating!
This is an oldie but a goodie. Peter is one of those kids who are the exception to the rule as he hates winter at the start of the story. However, his story sees him learn to find magic in the secrets and simple joys that winter brings.
” ‘Winter is full of secrets […] But you need the right kind of eyes to see them.” -Eveline Hasler, Winter Magic
#4: The Bookshop Dog by Cynthia Rylant
Summary: Martha Jane (MJ) and her human are the best of friends. They love to do everything together, from visiting the dentist to helping her human as she works as the owner of the town’s bookstore. And MJ has become quite the celebrity in her town as a result. However, when MJ’s human gets sick, there is a question of who will take up caring for MJ until her human can get back to her?
While not specifically about winter, this book is more so on this list for the hygge vibes it gives off. A warm and homey bookstore and community, some true love and the goodness of people all combine to make this little story one that will delight for many years, especially on a chilly winter’s day.
“Oh no, Martha Jane was such a good dog, such a sweet dog, that now people came into the bookshop looking first for her and second for books.” -Cynthia Rylant, The Bookshop Dog
