‘Tis about that time of the year again where the magic and wonder of the holiday season fills our hearts and our homes.
It’s a wonderful time of the year-and one that tends to be the focus for a lot of different areas of our lives- from our food, household decor, activities, music and even the books we read. In the spirit of the holiday season, here are 5 holiday books to read with the little people in your life!
#1: Christmas on Exeter Street
If I had to pick a FAVORITE children’s book from growing up, I am pretty sure it would be Christmas on Exeter Street.
Join Ben and Jane’s family and friends as they come to celebrate the holidays at their house on Exeter Street–and watch as the house truly becomes filled to the brim. With people sleeping on shelves, mantelpieces and window sills… every spot used in the house for company. This book is such a reminder of the fun and festivities of hosting the holidays.
“Everyone agreed that the house on Exeter Street was the best place of all to be at Christmastime.” -Diana Hendry, Christmas on Exeter Street
#2: The Miracle of the Potato Latkes
In The Miracle of the Potato Latkes, we meet Tante Golda whose favorite thing in the whole world is to make her loved ones potato latkes. However, one Hanukkah comes and Tante finds herself with barely any potatoes to make latkes. Resigned that there wouldn’t be latkes this year, Tante Golda finds herself witnessing some miracles to bring the true meaning of Hanukkah home.
“Sadly, Tante Golda trudged home. For the first time that she could remember, there would be no Hanukkah party, no guests filling her house, no golden, crispy latkes.” -Malka Penn, The Miracle of the Potato Latkes
#3: Night Tree
My parents were passionate about our house always having a real Christmas tree during the holidays. So, every year, we would bundle up, take our dog, and go cut down a Christmas tree. Putting it on our car’s roof, we’d drive home, put it in the stand, strand lights around it, decorate it and simply stand and enjoy the accomplishment. Was it a lot of effort? Absolutely. But, my brother and I have memories that will stay with us a lifetime, and the smell of a real life Christmas tree in the house-that alone was always worth it.
The Night Tree reminds me fondly of those childhood memories, but with a slight twist.
Join a family as they embark on the hunt for a Christmas tree. But, not just any Christmas tree… a night tree.
Popcorn chains, apples and tangerines ornaments, breadcrumbs, and nuts all adorn the tree which stands in the middle of a woods… in the hopes that the animals can enjoy their own Christmas tree.
Perhaps this book will inspire a new holiday tradition of getting a Christmas tree for inside the house and out.
“[T]hey’re all there together, singing their own Christmas songs on Christmas Day around our tree.” -Eve Bunting, Night Tree
#4: Joy to the World!: Christmas Around the Globe
Take a trip around the globe this festive season and learn all about the various ways Christmas is celebrated from each corner of the planet with Joy to the World.
From Columbia’s Day of Little Candles to Italy’s Epiphany Night, you may just find yourself in awe about how the same holiday is celebrated so differently!
“Though we might gather in different ways, Christmas for many brings meaningful days.” -Kate DePalma, Joy to the World
#5: The Story Orchestra’s The Nutcracker
Follow the story of The Story Orchestra: The Nutcracker, and have the chance to hear the music for yourself on each page. “The Russian Dance” and “The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” are just a couple of the music snippets you will get to hear. With dazzling graphics and sweet tunes, this book is a wonderful way to bring the Christmas and holiday cheer alive!
