April Showers bring… us a lot of wonderful time to cozy up inside with a book. Stay dry inside and read this month’s book. It’s a powerful one-and one that reminds us of the miracle that is life.

Keep reading to learn more about it!

Introducing the Book

*TRIGGER WARNING: Please note that this post/book talks about the subject of suicide. If you or someone you know needs help, please seek professional help.

To be completely authentic, I am slightly nervous to write this post. Mainly because this book talks about death and my mind kept thinking “How can you make a joy book out of a book about death?” Yet, there was something deep within me that felt like this is the book that I wanted to focus on this month— because this book is not about death, but about the joy of living life.

Given the complex subject matter of this book, rather than write my own summary of the book, I felt that sharing the book’s own summary would provide the best overview,

Here’s how the cover of the book summarizes The Midnight Library,

Between life and death there is a library. Up until now, Nora Seed’s life has been full of misery and regret. She feels she has let everyone down, including herself. But things are about to change. When she finds herself in the Midnight Library, she has the chance to make things right.

The books in the Midnight Library enable Nora to live as if she had done things differently. Each one contains a different life, a possible world in which she made different choices that played out in an infinite number of ways, affecting everyone she knew as well as many people she never met. With the help of an old friend, she can now undo every decision she regrets as she tries to work out her perfect life. But things aren’t always what she imagined they’d be and soon her choices place the library and herself in extreme danger.

Before time runs out, she must answer the ultimate question: What is the best way to live?

-Matt Haig, The Midnight Library

Much like the holiday classic movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, this book is truly one that leaves you with the emotion of feeling how amazing your life truly is.

Questions to Ask Yourself

Consider these questions while you read the book this month. I’m personally not a person who uses guided reading questions—feels a little too school-y for when you are reading for fun! I kept that in mind when developing these questions with the intention and hope they are useful and fun to think about!

A Final Note on Joy

One of my favorite quotes from the book is the following,

“We only need to be one person. We only need to feel one existence. We don’t have to do everything in order to be everything, because we are already infinite. While we are alive we always contain a future of multifarious possibility.” -Matt Haig, The Midnight Library

Dr. Joe Dispenza talks all the time about how we live in a world/ life of infinite possibility, and we can change our “reality” simply by shifting our thoughts/feelings/ behaviors. Combine this with the Theory of Parallel Universes, and this is why I truly felt that this book was the Joy Book for this month (if this too woo for you, no big deal– this is still a really great book!)

We are not made to stay just as we are—we are constantly changing, growing, and evolving. And we can ride this evolution by choosing to think, feel and act the way we feel our highest and best self shows up as. Life is truly a wonderful and joyful experience with each new unfolding and evolution.
