I’m of the generation that remembers when Miley Cyrus was Hannah Montana.
Each week, I’d tune in to see Miley/ Hannah live the life dreams are made of-having a house in Malibu on the beach and being a secret worldwide pop star.
We’ve seen Miley undergo quite the transformation in those post-Disney years. From singer to movie actor to just being an authentic version of herself. All the while, it was surprising that despite her massive success, she still had never won a Grammy for her work.
I recently re-stumbled upon this video of Miley when she finally won that Grammy for her song “Flowers” in 2024. And it reminded me how much I loved her speech.
I love the story of catching butterflies. Of a little boy who just wanted to catch a butterfly. So, he used a butterfly net and “went to work” trying.
And then, the little boy found himself still butterfly-less. At that moment, he was at a crossroads of saying “it’s never going to happen” or “it might not ever happen, and I’ll still be happy”, and he chose the latter.
And THAT was the moment when a butterfly landed on his nose.
The power of surrender. The sweet, sweet power of surrendering.
It’s not giving it up. It’s beyond that.
It’s a saying of “I’ll be okay even if it doesn’t happen. In fact, I can happy without it happening.”
It’s a sense of letting loose of the tight grip.
Of truly handing it over the Universe/God/higher power/ whatever name you chose to follow.
It’s a trust. A deep, deep trust that there is a higher plan.
The surrender is sometimes easy. Other times not so much.
But when you finally surrender…it’s when you might just see the most magic happen.
Here’s to surrendering to the highest good (+ buying ourselves flowers).
P.S. if you want a book about surrendering, I highly recommend The Surrender Experiment by Michael A. Singer. Talk about a magical unfolding!
