Color Psychology is something that really intrigues me as I have started learning about it!

What it says is that the colors we see in our daily lives impact our emotional state at a subconscious level (meaning we don’t even know they are impacting it!). Certain colors then can help us more easily tap into the feelings that make up our inner joy!

Here are 5 colors that can help to promote that feeling of inner joy within us! See if it resonates with you to incorporate them into your life more!

What is Color Psychology?

According to ColorPsychology.com,

Color psychology is the study of how colors affect your behavior, mood, and impression on others. Research shows that colors can greatly affect our moods and the way other people respond to us. Amazingly, colors can even change our heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration”

I am currently working my way through reading The Little Book of Colour by Karen Haller. A researcher of color, Haller provides an interesting look into the impact of why and how colors can impact our wellbeing!

I love this quote Haller says in the introduction of the book,

“For when we connect to colo[r], we connect to what we feel. And when we connect to what we feel, we can start to connect to who we are. Colo[r] comes in through our eyes, but it makes its way into our hearts.

Haller emphasizes in the book that color is impactful—at physical, mental and emotional levels.

In her chapter dedicated to the why of how colors impact us, she writes that the entire color spectrum is made up of energy—it’s on the electromagnetic scale! Which when this energy enters our brain, according to Haller, it enters the same area of the brain related to our emotions.

Interestingly, Haller states it was when our ancestors evolved that seeing the different colors was imperative—and became part of our subconscious programming (think we don’t even know it is happening—it’s below our consciousness or awareness!).

Haller summarizes the impact of color on us saying,

“Different wavelengths of light trigger different feelings. […] Every colo[r] affects how we think, how we feel and how we behave.

Given the evidence behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, it makes sense that different colors affect our emotions which then affect our thoughts and actions!

Important Note: Haller writes about in The Little Book of Colour that while each color has its own positive emotions it can help promote, each color (oftentimes it’s about the shades/intensity and duration of seeing the color) can actually affect us negatively as well.

Yellow, for example, is often seen to promote positivity (a large reason why I liked it for The Joyfilled Seeker site). However, Haller writes that while this is true—seeing yellow for long durations can actually make us feel more anxious!

Be aware of this if you decide to incorporate certain colors into your life more!
