Starting off this New Year is a new series called the Joyfilled Book Club! Each month will feature a new book that taps into my own inner joy , and I hope it will do the same for you!
This month is a book all about creating a home and a space that truly feels aligned with your soul. I hope you enjoy reading it!
Introducing the Book
Meik Wiking has been a favorite of mine for a few years now, since I read his first book—The Little Book of Hygge. A Danish man, he has become somewhat of an expert on happiness—even founding The Happiness Institute in Copenhagen.
Hygge is a concept I have talked about on this space a few times— even in my post on 10 joyful things for the month of January post!
My Hygge Home goes a step deeper into inviting more hygge into your life. It looks specifically at how to create a space that invites more hygge, more comfort and more coziness into your home.
Specifics are talked about: from what kind of lighting to use in different areas of your home, to preserving seasonally, to thinking about your work environment at home!
It’s truly a really fun book about taking stock of how you can increase the feelings of hygge when it comes to your home.
I think this quote summarizes this book’s ideas best,
“This book is intended to be not a to-do list but a catalog, or menu, for inspiration. My hope is that you will be more conscious of how our environment impacts not only our physical but our mental well-being and reflect on how our homes can play a part in how we feel. I hope you will take control over how to design, shape, and maintain the environments you live and work in, so that you can flourish in them.” -Meik Wiking, My Hygge Home
Questions to Ask Yourself
Here are some questions to consider while you read the book. I’m personally not a person who uses guided reading questions—feels a little too school-y for when you are reading for fun! I kept that in mind when developing these questions with the intention and hope they are useful and fun to think about!
A Final Note on Joy
If there’s one important thing to note about joy, it is that you don’t need a single thing to experience it.
This means that while you can completely update your home, you might still not feel joyful. We live in a time period that likes to put a lot of belief into “if you buy, or do, or have this then you’ll be joyful and happy forever and ever.”
Instead, I like to think of it this way: when you incorporate more things that resonate with you, the more easily you will be able to feel that inner joy within you. But you don’t have to have those things to feel that.
We spend a lot of time in our homes, and we— I believe— owe it to ourselves to make sure we truly love our homes. We deserve to feel…well…at home there (this rings even more true in the winter months when we tend to be inside more!)
This book is all about looking into ways to create an environment that truly brings you more positive feelings—and in doing so— I think you will notice it is easier to tap into that inner joy within you at all times!
Happy Reading!
